Using Your Kitchen in Ankara

A turkish kitchen often has a small electric oven, instead of a large oven underneath a range. Often, foods are cooked in shallow pans that fit into these small ovens. Turks tend to fill these pans with vegetables and meats and cook them together, creating a family style dish for dinner; with pilaf boiled on the range.

Measuring cups are difficult to find in Ankara. Measurements are based on spoon size: a tea spoon is the tiny tea stirring spoon, a soup spoon is the largest spoon you own. Also, because tea glasses tend to be standarized sizes, measurements are sometimes given as "1 tea glass" etc. If you are desperate for measuring cups, you will have to look hard or buy a mixer that might come with a free one.
